Eske Schlüters

Eske Schlüters (D, 1970) collects images from films by various directors for her videos and video installations, for example, Francois Ozon, Hal Hartley, or Michelangelo Antonioni, as well as others who remain unnamed.

Drawing from a repertory of image and text sequences, she edits narrations that do not follow a stringent narrative plot, but instead attempt to reveal the symbolic value of different image moments. Schlüters thus creates images that do not merely adhere to the level of citation but allow and aim at creating an openness for new and different interpretations. The rhythm and speed of these images, the noises and sounds, as well as the tone of the used and re-staged language go beyond the form of description and make use of their potential as a means that is quite varied in narrative terms.

In the video installation conceived as a trilogy, "Sehen Als Denken Sehen- Knowing Is Not Enough", Schlüters examines the themes of truth, love, beauty, and death. Does a linguistic and pictorial symbol exist that with simple means can represent love, death, or truth in their entire complexity? The path seems to lie in detecting the narrative in-between: a cautious approach, a fleeting touch, can be sensed in Schlüters' video installations. Yet the invented statements and pictures do not serve to underlie these themes, they instead appear to illustrate themselves, with the editing serving as a connecting element. Subtitles are added to pictures, they are accompanied by melodies, or what is spoken is translated into another language. So, upon closer examination, one can deduce that it is precisely the omitted image, the silent sound, the as yet unuttered word, which make death, truth, beauty, and love, as well as their respective symbolic content, experienceable from the inside, transferring them to an aesthetic level without defining them in a fixed way.
