Ulla von Brandenburg Ulla von Brandenburg works with different media such as drawing, video, film, space installation and performance. Motives of historic originals are brought forward by the illustration in a current time context and therefore act as filters that switch between the illustration and the viewer. In her exhibition "Den Gelben in die Ecke, Doublette in der Mitte" in the studio gallery she created a mural painting using the draft of a photograph by Henry Peach Robinson (1830- 1901). The photograph shows the dramatic scene of a girl being closer to the afterlife than to the here and now. By means of abstraction, enlargement and a new context creation von Brandenburg transforms this historic scene into the presence. The size and singularity of the mural painting generate a room-affecting presence. The viewer is inevitably caught in this tension space, which lets a third dimension arise in her work. The viewer witnesses a bizarre scene in which the protagonists cannot be clearly decoded because of their alternating affiliation. This creates multiple associations and narration lines. Von Brandenburg compares the silhouette-like scene with a text excerpt from the drama Ivanov from Anton Tschechov "Wenn wir dieses Stück land kaufen, gehören uns beide Ufer". (If we buy this land, both watersides will be ours.) Ulla von Brandenburg uses razor-thin transparent paper for her monochrome and large-sized line- and colour field drawings, which underlines the clarity and delicateness of her work. Her newer films show "Tableaux vivants" in which persons in groups of two or three are frozen in their poses. Their clarity resembles her drawings, yet she doesn't use this medium just for an eliciting drama and staginess. Only the wind can occasionally revive the silent scenes with life.
