Nevin Aladag

Mediation, (inter-cultural) communication and always reaching a consensus are the recurring themes in the compositions of Nevin Aladag. During her studies at the Art Academy already, she founded the Café Helga and the Gallery Goldankauf as part of an artist initiative. This setting provides a location for artistic representation and at the same time a platform for interaction.

Nevin Aladag's attention for Breakdance is primarily not out of an interest for its exotic sub-culture aspects, but its function as a non-verbal expression form between different cultures that usually have difficulties in communicating. The energetic intersections ("spin") in Breakdance are confronted with the stiff and tense sculptural poses ("freeze") that are created by the dancers. The expeditious Breakdance can barely be photographed except when in the moment of "freeze" time seems to stand still. Navin Aladag has adopted the "freeze" of contemporary dance and the Breakdance Culture into a part of her photographic work. The disciplined and fixed body suggests a control over reality. The short moment of pausing in which reality becomes a daydream and gravity is overcome. "Freeze" is a pose of the sub-culture, of Breakdance and Hip Hop, which provide a home and a potential of identity construction, especially for young people out of migration families.

The frozen and numb bodies come across as sculptures in the public space and in spite of their inelasticity they hold a certain weightless and imaginary aspect to them. Nevin Aladag seeks to find a contrast in this scene and questions if the temporary gaining of control is durable.
